One video, several versions
When you upload or broadcast a video, the delivery system creates several versions of it at different quality levels. Each version uses a different amount of data per second.
The player chooses
The viewer's player measures how fast data is arriving. If the connection is strong, it asks for the highest quality. If it weakens, the player switches to a lower version before the picture stalls. Most viewers never notice the change.
Why it matters
- Viewers on weak mobile connections can keep watching
- Viewers on fast connections get a sharper picture
- You do not have to guess one quality for everyone
This is why uploading a single, high-quality source is better than uploading something already compressed. The system can make the lower versions from a strong original, but it cannot add detail back.
